Mam Tor, which overlooks the Castleton at the western end of the Hope Valley, is the major local centre for hang gliding and paragliding.
This hill and nearby Rushup Edge have slopes which face north, south and east so it is possible to take off from there almost whatever the wind direction.
On any suitable day you can see numerous hang-gliders and paragliders in the air from Castleton village.
