The Caverns

Home / The Caverns

Castleton is the centre of Peak District caving, with numerous interesting caves, pot-holes and former mines to explore.

These include both Peak Cavern, which is probably the longest local cave system and Titan, the recently discovered pothole which is the deepest cave system in Britain.

The majority of the caves are to be found to the west of Castleton, on the limestone moorland between Castleton and Sparrowpit.

Well-known local cave systems include Giants Hole, P8, Oxlow Mine and Nettle Pot, and there are circuits which range from beginners standard to the most diffilcult grades.

This is a dangerous sport and expert advice or assistance is recommended. The best local source for equipment hire and advice is Caving Supplies in Buxton. AdventureQuip on the Market Place in Castleton may also be able to give some useful local tips.

The Hollowford Centre in Castleton offer Caving courses suitable for beginners.
